Harry Beanham...I've now done several posts on photos relating to him and as I've several old photograph albums that were his I've worked through some more interesting pics from the 1920's involving Harry...and his ABC motorcycles....Early Australian Motorcycling...

Harry Beanham.... an interesting chap who I've described in more detail in previous posts on this blog and you can find them by typing in "Harry Beanham" in the search facility over on the RHS of this blog....
Worth a look again....
Harry motorcycled all his life and had an interest in the 1920's in the ABC motorcycle and had at least one French version of this motorcycle...the ABC was designed by the Englishman Granville Bradshaw and the first photo is of great interest to me as the text on the back indicated that Harry visited the UK in 1927 taking his then ABC with him, named by HB..." Ziska II ".
The comment from Harry on the small print I've scanned is "At Reading, 1927 ( April) on way back from "Granville Bradshaw" run to London..."
The  registration for This ABC was DP4480, mostly visible on the front number plate and you'll see more of this in the following photos...
Since setting this post up I spoken with David Beanham, Harry was his uncle ...David has been in contact with Harry's daughter Pam and they and now myself are pretty sure Harry never left Australia...
The conundrum is who is riding the ABC in Reading, UK....perhaps a friend of Harry's. Harry calls this motorcycle ZiskaII  which tends to indicate he may have bought it off this chap/friend...

The text says....Ziska II with Fairie Queen up! (July 1926), then perhaps later penciled in ...Nosworthy Bridge....
I Googled the bridge name and there is a Norsworthy Bridge in Dartmoor, UK and the photo I captured from the site and below, taken in May 2011 by Innes Spanbauer to who I acknowledge credit for this photo, looks remarkably similar....
The text says...DP4480 as I first had her.... then later penciled in At The Rock, Yelverton. Again I made the assumption that Harry wrote on the back of the small photo, hence the "I first had her"....
Again a Google search reveals a Yelverton in Dartmoor area...
So perhaps Harry travelled to the UK to pick up a new ABC....pure speculation.

The engine unit with "Taylor rockers"....of Diana ...Jan.1925.
I have no other reference to the name Diana, which seems to refer to another of Harry's bikes...
 Ziska II in the background...likely still in UK by the car registration number.

We are now in Australia...the reference to the Bendigo centre sets that...
Perhaps another of HB's ABCs..the registration is now 21679 and I believe could be South Australian. 19 Sept. 1926.

Again two ABCs ....
 Again Harry with two ABC's, unsure where or when.
ABC rego 21679 but no information at two the lady and child ,where or when...
A Beanham photo, again with no details.....
Again a bit of a mystery, however the back was dated....5th April 1920.
Finally the pic below seems out of sequence, was with his stuff and I guess could be his parents...
My next Beanham post will be his photos from the early 1960's of many of these motorcycles that he kept, plus others acquired over the years.... Broughs, Harleys and so on...

More photos from Harry Beanham's early Australian motorcycling.......


In two  earlier blogs I introduced Harry Beanham to you....key his name in the search facility at the top of this blog....
I spent an afternoon scanning in the small 3" x 2" sepia photographs, the vast majority unlabeled, that I have in former photo albums of Harry's....
Regretably, other than one or two, most have nothing on them to indicate where or when they were taken..
But there content never ceases to interest me...looking at the machines they rode in that period in the later 1920's in Victoria and New South Wales, Australia.
So I'm sharing some more with you....

I'll share a wry, interesting story on Harry, related to me today as it happened, by Mick Moyle of Moyles a secondhand machinery merchant, a dying breed today, who buys and sells used lathes, mills, taps, dies, you name it....I was around there after an 11BA tap...and he had it.
Harry became a wealthy man over his life by shrewd dealing in the secondhand machinery trade and frequented auctions, often Mick Moyle was there, they were rivals in the trade.
A one auction, run by Hymans, a large auction house in Sydney in the past, Harry had bought stuff and wanting to leave before the auction finished attempted to pay for the purchases with a cheque, refused curtly by the lady running this side of the auction.
At this stage I should mention Harry was rather eccentric and chose to dress in blue bib and brace workers overalls, looking like , well a hobo...
Mick offered to pay with his cheque which had been cleared previously...Harry was calm and refused and got the auctioneer, Mr Hyman's attention, while he was selling, much to Hymans annoyance. "They wont accept my cheque" Harry stated.
Irritated, Hyman re-iterated the terms of the auction..."cash or bank cheque !!" and continued with the sale.
Harry drew his attention again....
"What now" Hyman snapped....
"When you come to my office to pay your rent" Harry called out...."make sure you bring it in cash...!"

Harry of course owned the building the auction house was using.....
Mick Moyle started clapping, then the rest of those in the hall clapped as well, Hyman was scarlet faced...presumably with embarrassment...
Hyman was gob-smacked and quickly accepted Harry's cheque.....

Another foray into Harry Beanham's early Australian motorcyling photographs.....

In an earlier blog I introduced Harry Beanham to you....key his name in the search facility at the top of this blog....
I spent an afternoon scanning in the small 3" x 2" sepia photographs, the vast majority unlabeled, that I have in former photo albums of Harry's....
Regretably, other than one or two, most have nothing on them to indicate where or when they were taken...I did a bit of sleuthing...
But, there is a message for us there, me included....please write on the back of your photographic prints what they are.....
We don't want another generation wondering as we are.....
The photos are in the area NW of Melbourne in the Kinglake region....certainly Bowden Spur Road is there....
Bowden Spur Road goes towards Kinglake, Victoria....
Kinglake was one of the towns devastated in the January 2009 Victorian bushfires that took nearly 200 lives.....
They are of interest for the motorcycles and the people or rather the way they dressed for motorcycling at that time....
The same the world over.....

Harry Beanham, a view from DQ.......

Harry Beanham is an Australian motorcycling enigma and his story has been told in Jim Scaysbrook's excellent bi-monthly publication "Old Bike Australasia" by Peter Smith in issue no.7, April-June 2008 together with others in the Beanham family, for there was more than Harry in the motorcycle trade.
Harry's brother Robert started Modak Motorcycles in Elizabeth Street, Melbourne, Victoria in 1930 and his son David Beanham continues it today with assistance from his mother Jean.
On Harry's death there were numerous auctions of the enormous amounts of tools, machinery, motorcycle miscellania and motorcycles from his estate and from these auctions, Harry's photographs, photograph albums etc passed in interested peoples hands, myself included.
The Vintagent , Paul d'Orleans, on his blogsite has offered two blogs on Harry and his ABC motorcycles.
I attended the auction spoken of by Howard Burrows who contributed one of the stories of Harry's ABC's on Paul's site.

But what of my relationship with Harry?
I said he was an enigma...I never ceased to be amazed at the interests he had...he played saxaphone, well, as a young man. He had a great interest in photography and told me of how he submitted his photos into contests run by the photographic journals of the day, winning prizes of photographic materials which allowed him to continue his hobby.
He frequented all sorts of auctions throughout his life, making shrewd purchases for subsequent resale.
He was a lifelong member of The Vintage Motorcycle Club of Australia (NSW) and was generous in donating a sizeable percentage of funds to the club when they auctioned some of his bikes and parts in the 1980's. He often was seen at their club rides in the 1970's on a HD, but shunned company unless he took a shine to you.
I recall in the early 1970's on a visit to Munroe Machinery in Chippendale, Sydney, we spoke of a news documentary on Sydney TV one Sunday evening and during this particular one, reference was made of a large collection of glass plate negatives taken during 1895-1910 by Charles Kerry a Sydney photographer. Mention was made that half the collection was missing and then Harry revealed that he had it, having purchased it in 1942 for about $88 in todays money.
He wanted it donated to a "useful" museum...I arranged it and there were 3500 glass plate negatives in all, the Macleay Museum in the grounds of Sydney University has them and they are referred to as "The Beanham Collection".
We got on well together.....
Stories abound.... but more for another day....
Let me share some of Harry's photographs that I have with you....

The first one is Harry on one of his Harley's in 1932.























Another of Harry's great interest in motorcycles was the LE Velocette of all things and there were approximately 38 auctioned off after his death...
Sydney was awash with LE's.....

Harry's daughter Pam sits on an LE in the grounds of their house in Wollstonecraft, Sydney, with Harry and his wife behind.















































Harry had Allparts Motorcycle businesses in several capital cities in Australia, including Sydney's motorcycle "hub", Wentworth Avenue and Adelaide's, Flinders Street and Melbourne's Elizabeth Street..

The Sydney shot is in 1931, the Adelaide one in the 1960's by the cars in front.

































He traded under other company names...Gearco, Munroe Machinery, Allgears, Camco...


















Then he used his camera when he went touring, both in NSW and into Victoria...
