A miscellania of motorcycling photos from my archive.....

At this moment in time, the Velobanjogent is like a "one legged tap dancer".....so much to do with three blogs to set up weekly,and little time to do it, so some research for another technical item from my literature is temporarily on "the back burner" and this post is a selection of photos from a folder on my computer hard drive titled "my pictures".....actually this folder is where all the good stuff is...

But these are not cataloged and some I've no information on who they are or when the photo was taken...

But they make interesting viewing.....

1936 German GP/The GP of Europe....Tyrell-Smith #92,Excelsior the eventual winner, overtakes the Italian Pigorini at the Hohenstein-Erntthal circuit.

An intriguing early photo that I have no details for...

Larry Devlin from Northern Ireland emailed me with the comment..."The photo was taken in Verviers, Belgium in August 1946, and riding A1 is  Bill Nicholson ( Billy Nick) from Northern Ireland....thanks Larry...DQ

Cecil Sandford on a Velocette MOV racer in 1953 at Eppynt.

Dave Jenkins, well known Australian road racer in the late 1930's/late 1940's on his 1935 Mk.1 KSS road bike.

Another evocative photograph showing an untidy start to an event on 4th July 1949 at Haddenham airfield circuit.

Australian Orrie Salter during the 1962 sidecar TT in the IOM. Salter later retired during the event.

Oran Park circuit, south of Sydney, now a housing estate...Noel Manning aboard his Hillman Imp engined outfit. 5th November 1967.

Australian Ted Carey, Bathurst 1952 on what appears to be a MOV Velocette. Ted by then had his special 250 DOHC MOV based racer and I suspect this was a bike he brought along to do some practice on.

My old Velocette Thruxton, bought new by me in Feb.1967 and sold to the pictured rider, Tony Keene. The photo appears to be at an Australian Velocette OC National Rally at Bundanoon in 1986.

And the following photo,is not motorcycle oriented and taken by me as a youth in the early 1950's on a trip with my Uncle and Aunt to Canberra. Taken outside the National War Memorial, it shows a Japanese midget submarine.

There was an attack in Sydney Harbour by three of these subs... one escaped and was lost off the coast, recently the wreck site was discovered.

The other two where depth charged.

The photo is actual parts of the two subs, set together.

A grisly coffin if ever there was one....

A look through some photos from DQs archive...no particular order but with more of a Norton theme...I like them and perhaps with Christmas approaching.... organising a detailed article is beyond me....

A youthful Kel Carruthers...CR93 Honda, with family, likely Winton road race circuit, near Benalla, Victoria.Probably in mid 1960's.
Kell went to Europe and won a 250 world championship on a Benelli/4. He settled in the USA and ran the Yamaha race team for many years.

Aub Lawson probably at Sydney Showground Speedway.

I found this photo recently...it is one of some 25 pics adorning the walls of a pedestrian tunnel under, for me, nearby Ashfield Railway station.
The text says "motorcycles in a doctors yard,circa 1915". But I doubt the date, as the NSW licence plates are too great a number for that period and the word "NSW" did not appears on licence plates until around 1922...

Down the other end of the tunnel...couldn't resist this, well you wouldn't knowing my interest in traditional jazz.

Finally a little Velocette stuff to finish off this post...
Earlier this year in March was the 50th Anniversary of the successful attempt by Velocette to average 100mph for 24 hours on a basically standard 500cc Venom Clubman motorcycle.
The Australian Velocette Owners Club approached Australia Post and had a special 60cents postage stamp made up....
Club-member Stuart Brown was responsible for the production and the original poster was too cluttered to use, so a modified photo used by myself as my business logo, KTT Services and "MotorCycling" for the cover of their Sports Road Tests seemed imminently suitable...
What do you think....

And if you are in the USA...the latest Black and Decker Garage brochure has an interesting cover photo....

And finally as over the next few weeks with Christmas, a new one year old grand daughter living with us,  and Judy and I spending between Christmas and the New Year up in Bundaberg, Northern Queensland with my playing banjo at the 66th Australian Jazz Convention, my post timings could be a little erratic...so from the Velobanjogent...

A stop gap blog of some of DQ's archival photos.......

Its time for another blog, I've been otherwise occupied in preparing for printing the latest Aust. Velo OC magazine and, well admit it DQ you're just too lazy to complete the research of some items in the pipeline......

So bear with me, with this offering of photos of no particular theme from my collection and apologies if the odd one has been featured before.... acknowledgements to S.R. Keig Ltd, Fox Photos and Morton's Motorcycle Media who own the copyright on several photographs....

This Mk.7 KTT, photographed 23.01.1947, owned by Bill O'Rourke, features a Rex McCandless conversion to a swing arm rear suspension....

Taken in 1954 following their victory in both the 250cc, 350cc and unlimited class with a 250cc BMW and a 600cc BMW in the first 24hour race held at the Mt.Druitt circuit on the western outskirts of Sydney. L-R...Wal Hawtry, Jack Humphries, Don Bain, Don Flynn, Jack Forest, Len Roberts.The 250 won its class by 54 laps and the 350cc class by 19 laps....Don Bain was involved with the machine's preparation as well as riding it, and I recall he told me scrutineering was not of the standard for originality of later years........

A pic scanned from a book on the R75 BMW...shows an outfit bogged to the axles in mud on the Eastern Front in 1941.......

H. Tyrell Smith aboard the Excelsior 4 valve, IOM TT 1936....

I originally had this photo above as the mechanical marvel Excelsior, hover and email in June 2012 corrected me...

".....Your photo of Tyrell Smith does not show him on an Excelsior Mechanical Marvel, these were 1933/34 bikes and pushrod, christened Mechanical Marvel because they went from the drawing board to win the TT. Tyrell was still riding Rudge in 1933/4 and did not ride for Excelsior till slightly later.

  Tyrell is in fact on one of the later works overhead camshaft 4 valve racing bikes made by Excelsior. if you need any further info, I have done a book called Excelsior the Racing Years , there are loads of period shots showing both types of bike and riders.

A "Mixed bag" from DQ...some interesting photographs....

When I come to do a new blog, usually I have a subject in mind...in fact I have a "Velobanjogent" folder in My Documents on my computer and within it are numerous other folders of varying titles containing photos for future use etc... well now I've whetted your appetite, like what?
"DOHC Velos", "TT and Manx GP", "Waycott 600cc SOHC Velo outfit","The 4 cylinder Velocette", more Keith Bryen and Allan Schafer photos to name some....
But this time I was taken by various pics, in no special order or detail as I assemble the next edition of the Australian Velocette OC magazine, "FishTailDownUnder" which you may recall I'm editor...so they form this blog....

This photo below is of a solid silver Velocette KTT Mk.8 engine. Made by a jeweller in New Zealand and presented yearly at the Classic motorcycle races at Pukekohe in February for the winner of the Velocette race. I remember winning it in I think 1981 on my Mk.8..foolishly I thought I got to take it home! But the best that occured was to look at it and eventually get my name engraved on a winners plaque...
Great "bit of kit" as they say.....
























Pictured below is Barrie James with Geoff Dodkin, former London Velocette dealer and one of GD's Velo specials, now owned by Barrie.....






































Barrie also sent this photo of the special 5" Velocette clock in a wooden plinth, given to him by Geoff Dodkin.
This brought back memories, for we built this clock in my shop in the 1980's and I presented it to Geoff in his motorcycle shop in East Sheene, London, UK. He's kept it all these years and it was nice to see it passed on to a Velocette enthusiast.
























This next cartoon tickled my fancy as they say...
When Australia went to metric measure in the 1970's, a small booklet was published on "Understanding SI metrification" and this cartoon illustrated it....
























In the late 1940s in Sydney a Velocette racer, Ted Carey, made his DOHC 250 Velocette engine on a 250 MOV pushrod engine, with a gear train a la MV.Benelli etc and of course Australian Les Diener and some others elsewhere in the world did likewise.
The engine has been owned by Sydney engine builder Malcolm Sullivan since the 1960s and with the recent interest in Classic racing fitted it into a variation of the UK Doug Beasley swinging arm frame...nice bit of kit...


















And finally...published by good friend John Jennings on his blog..."Private Owner Downunder, the story of a vintage Velo racer" ......(http://ozvintageracer.blogspot.com/ ), is this super evocative photo of a man and his machine, and yes I admit I'm biased, it's my old Velocette Thruxton...
Tony Keene, its next owner, astride it at the National Velocette Owners Club of Australia National Rally at Bundenoon, south of Sydney, in October 1986....
